The Question That Started It

If the grid is down, the network is down, and help is far… what’s left?

We didn’t start by trying to build a “hardcore device.” We started with a plain question that hits harder in Canada: if the power’s gone, the network’s gone, and rescue may take time, what do you still have?Canada’s risk isn’t a single event — it’s stacking failures: distance, weather, outages, and isolation arriving together.Vast distances: rescue can be cross-region and cross-time-window, not “around the corner.”Compound disasters: long outages + extreme weather + exposure + evacuation/disconnection.Reality check: Canada’s emergency guidance emphasizes being able to self-sustain for at least 72 hours.“Emergency gear doesn’t fail because it lacks features. The Battery Problem (Myth vs Reality)

The uncomfortable truth: ‘ten years later, will it still turn on?’

At first, we explored the obvious route: make a rugged radio + flashlight + power bank, powered by a rechargeable lithium battery.

Then we faced how people actually treat emergency gear in cities: buy it, test it once, store it, forget it for years.

Rechargeable lithium isn’t the problem because of capacity — it’s the uncertainty after long storage: after ten years, can it still boot reliably? No one can guarantee that.Myth: Bigger battery = safer deviceReality: Long-storage reliability is the real enemy

X1 must reliably start after long storage — and if it’s depleted, it must be revivable by human power.

Supercapacitor-First / Turning Point

​We flipped the power architecture. Supercapacitor became the main energy system.

This decision shaped almost everything that followed. Instead of treating a supercapacitor as a minor add-on, we made it the core:Supercapacitor as primary power + primary bufferBattery as the backup floor, chosen by scenarioHandles “dirty” hand-crank input better — hand-crank output fluctuates; supercapacitors absorb and smooth it.Built for high-frequency cycles — “crank → use → crank” happens constantly outdoors; supercapacitors are made for that.Decouples “can it start?” from battery health — if you can generate a small burst of energy, the system can run a minimal life-saving loop.

This turns X1 from “a device with a crank” into an “energy self-rescue system.”
